Antigo Legion team posts first round victory at state against Superior

The Antigo Legion Post #3 baseball team opened play in the Class AA State Tournament in River Falls against Superior. The Typhoon was able to defeat the Reds 7-3 to advance in the winner’s bracket where they will play either River Falls or Beaver Dam at 7pm.
The Typhoon was able to score a run in the top of the 1st when Cam Noskowiak reached with a one out single and later scored on an error. Superior was able to tie the contest in the bottom of the 1st with an unearned run. In the top of the 2nd Inning Jed Weix led off the inning and socked a solo homerun to rightfield to put up Antigo 2-1. The Typhoon tacked on 3 more runs in the top of the 3rd Inning with Hunter Kirsch knocking in a run with an RBI single, an Alex Nagel RBI ground-out and a sacrifice fly by A.J. Kirsch.
Antigo would add two more runs in the top o the 7th when Jed Weix blasted a 2-run homerun to rightfield to build the Antigo advantage to 7-1. Superior was able to score two runs in the bottom of the 7th but it was not enough to cut into the deficit as Antigo went on to win 7-3.
Alex Nagel was the starting pitcher as he pitched a complete game. Nagel would allow 3 Runs (2 Earned), off of 4 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts.
Jed Weix was the leading hitter with two homeruns. Hunter Kirsch,A.J. Kirsch, and Arin VerHagen also finished with two hits. Max Nowinsky, Cam Noskowiak, Jake Husnick, and Matt Winter also contributed with singles.
Josh Tomczak led Superior with two basehits, Sean O’Neill had a double, and Matt Strum also finished with hit.
With the win, the Antigo Legion team improves to 18-5 overall, and moves into the winner’s bracket, where they will next face the winner of River Falls/Beaver Dam. Because of heavy late afternoon showers, the games between Seymour & Waterford as well as the River Falls & Beaver Dam contests will be pushed back until Thursday morning. Because of this Antigo’s next game will not be until Friday.
