Antigo baseball found stiffer opposition than originally planned from a depleted squad in the Waupaca Comets Friday evening, pulling off a 6-3 win at Kretz Field.

“Any win is a good win,” said Coach Scott Farmer after the game. “Apparently Waupaca had quite a few starters on a trip to New York. But what I do love about these kind of wins is what they tell you as a team -where can we improve. Waupaca is a solid program and we did not play our best and still pulled off a win. In order to compete with them later in the year, hopefully we get out kinks worked out and improve on an individual and team basis in many areas of the game.”

Brady Tatro struck out seven batters and allowed five hits in five innings as a starter. AJ Kirsch saw work in the last three innings, striking out four while allowing zero hits, walks, or runs.

“Brady did not have his best stuff, but the only time they got anything [was when] our defense fell apart. AJ Kirsch threw well in his two innings of work,” Farmer added.

Antigo held a 3-0 lead entering the top of the fourths where Waupaca briefly tied it up. With runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth, the Robins later resurgence and Kirsch’s late relief and closing abilities helped the boys hold off the Comets.

“12 hits is a nice day at the plate and yet we still struggled with runners in scoring position. The key to our team is getting the leadoff hitter on because when we do we usually score them. All of our runs came from [our] leadoff hitters of the inning getting on,” Coach Farmer said about his offense.

Hunter Kirsch was 2-2 with two walks, Jesse Jankowski and Matt Arndt finished 2-3 and 2-4 respectively.

The Robins host Mosinee in conference play at Kretz Field on Tuesday evening at 5 PM.
