For the Antigo Times

It was a beautiful spring night for soccer on Monday as the Lady Robins soccer squad took on Newman Catholic again for the second time in a week.

Playing a game that was rescheduled from earlier in the season, being just one of seven games this week for the Robins. Antigo knew what they had to do from the start, having just played Newman last Tuesday, and they did just that.

Antigo was able to start the game with a strong offense and was able to dominate the first 10 minutes of the game getting the first shot on goal between the two rivals. That quick start quickly faded and communication came to a halt which allowed Newman to make their first strike at 13:16.

Antigo picked up their game and challenged Newman well and was able to get them offside which saved a few breakaway goals. In the 30th minute of the game the second goal of the night was challenged by the center official for being offside on a breakaway, however, it was over ruled by the line judge and it was confirmed as a goal making the score 2-0. That goal seemed to mess with Antigo’s head and they were not able to get back in the game before half and Newman pushed through 2 more goals making the score 4-0 going into the half.

Antigo started the second half slowly and had trouble communicating allowing in a breakdown of the defensive line and allowing Newman to score in the 48th minute. Antigo, having trouble getting into their usual groove was able to hold Newman for 10 more minutes when they were able to strike again on a breakaway.

With emotions running high and an already very aggressive game Antigo’s senior captain Molly Brown was yellow carded for unsportsmanlike conduct after she collided with a Newman player as Brown was playing the ball. Antigo finally came together talking more and moving the ball up the field efficiently. That allowed freshman captain McKenzie Schroepfer a beautiful battle against Newman’s Kate David allowing Schroepfer to set up for a fantastic shot on goal, fighting David the whole way, only to be denied by Newman’s goalie.

Newman finished the night with 3 more goals before the buzzer at 90 minutes. The Robins take on Lakeland tonight at Listle Field at 5:00.
