Antigo Boys Tennis steps out on courts after long winter, takes loss to Medford
For the Antigo Times
After three weeks of delay due to snow, the Antigo boys tennis team finally stepped out on the courts of Medford to play some tennis Thursday. Having had only two days of practice outside, and that being on wet courts, the boys had a rough day competing against the red raider team.
“We are very inexperienced this year. There are only two varsity players returning from last year, Tanner stueck and Brody Bunnell. This is the first time playing high school level tennis for most of the other players. The good news is that the boys have a good attitude, a willingness to learn and are improving daily,” said Coach David Zalewski.
Though the team score was lopsided in Medford’s favor, the Red Robin boys put up a good fight. No one got discouraged or quit trying, even when they fell behind. The newly formed doubles teams of Bunnell and Bartletti at number 1 and McFarlane and Reineke at number 2 showed real promise as they all played with a lot of spirit.
Antigo’s sole victory came from freshman Simon McPhail. In each set he fell behind, but fought his way back to capture two close sets.
Antigo plays Rhinelander at home next Tuesday.
