The Antigo Red Robins Wrestling Team Opened the 2018-2019 Season by Capturing the Team Championship at the John Roberts Invite on December 1st
Using the strength of four individual champions, as well as four podium placers, the Antigo Wrestling team opened the 2018-2019 season by capturing the team championship at the John Roberts Invite on December 1st. The Sheldon Fieldhouse hosted 337 matches between athletes from 13 teams, and at the end of the day, the Antigo Red Robins finished at the top.
A strong quartet of seniors captured individual titles. Ben Stimac, competing at 132 pounds, started his season flawlessly by capturing gold on the strength of five pins, with only one of his opponents surviving past the first period. Jovanni Cataneda stepped on the mat at 160 pounds and found himself undefeated over the course of five contests, picking up two pins, two decisions, and a major decision. 170-pound wrestler Korbin Krueger avenged a loss from last year’s conference tournament with a very well wrestled 9-3 decision in the finals. He advanced to the finals on the back of four pins. Collinn Eldridge didn’t allow a single opponent to reach the third period on his path to winning gold at 182 pounds. He had three first round pins and two second round pins.
Sophomore Josh Heuss stepped up to the varsity stage in a big way, pinning his first 3 opponents before falling by a close 6-5 decision in the finals to place second. Also placing second was 220-pound junior Nick Roller, whose victories came via three falls and a technical fall. Nick only tasted defeat once.
Freshman Seth Beaber made a successful debut picking up a podium finish by finishing third. Competing at 106 pounds, he won his first two matches via fall. Those victories put him into the championship bracket, where he dropped matches to the first and second place wrestlers. Also placing third was senior Royce Bauer at 160 pounds. Royce collected a victory by decision and two falls in his five matches.
Sophomore 132 pounder Logan Edwards used victories from two early falls to place himself into the championship bracket. Finishing the day 2-2 gave him a fourth-place finish. Also placing fourth was 145-pound Senior Dylan Warax. Dylan won his first three matches via fall, before finishing the day 3-2. The third Antigo wrestler to finish fourth was Junior Talik Bussey. Talik was able to pick up three victories by fall and finished 3-2.
Next in line for Antigo are the Neenah Duals on December 8th, in Neenah Wisconsin.
