Antigo Officer in Prom Shooting Identified
For Antigo Times
The heroic Antigo police officer who fired several shots at a gunman who opened fire on students outside a prom Saturday night in Antigo has been identified.
According to court records, Patrolman Andy Hopfensperger was checking cars in the Antigo High School parking lot Saturday night when 18-year-old Jakob Wagner shot and wounded two people as they left the dance. The records say Hopfensperger shot Wagner multiple times to stop the attack.
Wagner, the shooter, was later pronounced dead that evening.
The USA Today Network-Wisconsin reports that Hopfensperger is a three-year veteran of the Antigo Police Department. He is on paid administrative leave, which is routine for officers involved in shooting.
