The City of Antigo played host to two charity tournaments this past weekend, each helping their own respective causes for the community.

Cross Checking Cancer for Matt

Teams from around the area battled on behalf of Matt Young this past Saturday at the Antigo Middle School. Young, recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, had a chance to see the community come before him for a floor hockey tournament of epic proportions.

The teams met for an opening ceremony just before 10 AM on Saturday in the AMS gymnasium, where the entire contingent of players, officials, volunteers, and spectators came before the stage where Young had a chance to see the communities support for him.

Young dropped the puck on the event’s opening faceoff. Teams competed in two, 10-minute halves in front of impressive crowds of both charity supporters and hockey fans.

Team Hydratight took the championship trophy home.

The 2017 Broomball Blitz Champions – Bradley Funeral Home

The Antigo Fire Department held its Broomball Blitz tournament on Sunday in conjunction with the city’s Winter Fun and Wellness Day. Proceeds from the event went to benefit a new fire extinguisher training system for the department.

Broomball is a hockey-like sport where players use either actual brooms or short, blunt-bladed sticks to maneuver a ball around on ice and score goals – all while being on foot, not skates.

Bradley Funeral Home was this year’s winner of the AFD’s Broomball Blitz.
