Langlade County Senior Citizens Club Meeting Notice

The next meeting of the Langlade County Senior Club is Tuesday, May 8, 2018 from 1:30pm to 3pm. They meet at the Antigo Public Library, 617 Clermont Street, Antigo; in the meeting room off the main hallway.
The meeting opens for some general discussion of any member’s previous months activities, any illnesses of members and recognizes those who have grown one year older. A door prize drawing is held for 10 lucky winners, and some light hearted bingo is played. Please call Doug at 715-623-2253, if you have any questions.
They will have a guest speaker and any members of the community are welcome to attend. The guest speaker is Jennifer Cummings, Director of Aging and Wellness for the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin (ADRC). She will be providing an overview of the ADRC-CW, our services/programs first and then speak to an overview of aging specific issues:
- Planning ahead to avoid crisis situations by giving consideration to what folks priorities may be
- Opportunities to stay connected and socially engaged in their community
- Get feedback on what they see are needs/barriers/and strengths in the community
- Have some discussion about what “they” suggest are next steps in working to address concerns and needs
Presidents Report; Doug reported on: Alliance for Retired Americans Friday Alert and where conservatives and trump want to modify the Omnibus Budget Bill to reduce funding for Social Security and Part A of Medicare; he read the Oneida County Senior Citizens article on Food Share and encourage all to take advantage. It is not a welfare program and only 30% of people over 60 who are eligible for Food Share take it; he encouraged members to participate in the Voters Engaged program on April 14 at the Oneida County Senior Center for a listening session where in attendance will be State Senator Tom Tiffany, State Representative Mary Falzkowski, State Senator Rob Swearingen, representative for US Senator Tammy Baldwin, representative for US Senator Ron Johnson but no-one for US Representative Sean Duffy; he spoke about the Building a Healthier Langlade County meeting he attended and the community assessment they plan on doing.
Kathy Schultz: Kathy Schultz from our Aging Disability and Resource Center at 1225 Langlade Road, Antigo: She talked about scams towards seniors and especially the post cards received and best to simply throw away; then she went through the top ten scams against seniors; (1) IRS impersonations by phone; (2) robo calls; (3) sweepstakes, Jamaican lottery ; (4) “can you hear me” phone call; (5) grandparent scam where you asked to send money; (6) computer scams for repair; (7) romance scams; (8) elder financial abuse is usually done by family members; (9) identity theft; (10) government grants.
Check out the club and please bring your ideas for club activities, which are not only important to seniors, but for the betterment of the community. Any first time attendee can enjoy taking part in the door prize drawing and bingo. Upon their return at another meeting, the club would hope they would join.
