For the Antigo Times

The next meeting of the Langlade County Senior Club is Tuesday, June 12, 2018 from 1:30pm to 3pm. The club meets at the Antigo Public Library, 617 Clermont Street, Antigo; in the meeting room off the main hallway.

The meeting opens for some general discussion of any members’ previous month’s activities; any illnesses of members; and recognizes those who have grown one year older. A door prize drawing is held for 10 lucky winners and some light hearted bingo is played.

At the last meeting, they had a quest speaker from the ADRC-CW, Jennifer Cummings. Jennifer Cummings is the director of Aging and Wellness from our Aging Disability and Resource Center Central Wisconsin. Her purpose is to help people live a longer and better life and she needs to know what citizens want and need. The ADRC-CW works to keep people as independent as possible or help when they enter in long term health care needs. She spoke on many topics including: keeping medical appointments on a regular basis; developing a checklist and having a plan before seeing a doctor; keeping in touch with your pharmacist who may catch any conflicts with medication; having an advance care directive so if you are not capable of letting someone know, it will be in writing; staying connected to your community and being involved, socializing with others, taking a class.

Our ADRC-CW was not one of the groups to get funding for a dementia specialist, but they will try again in the next funding cycle. They have a memory scene test, a simple 15 minute test to develop a baseline. Next year, you go back to take the test again and see if there are any changes. There are 60 types of dementia.

June 18 is the date to qualify and pick up the senior famers market vouchers at the office. Jennifer handed out an Aging Plan 2019-2021 Community Survey and most returned a completed form. If you want to fill out the form contact Jennifer at 220-3rd Avenue, Suite I, Wisconsin Rapids, 54495 ([email protected]), or president of the club, Doug Curler has copies and can be contacted at [email protected] or 715-623-2253.

There was no president’s report because of the guest speaker.

Check out the club and bring your ideas for club activities, which are not only important to seniors, but for the betterment of our community. The procedure is to allow any first time attendee to enjoy taking part in the door prize drawing and bingo.
