Snow, sleet and rain expected to significantly impact road conditions

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) would like to remind motorists to be cautious if traveling in what could be hazardous conditions. Strong winds and snow, sleet and rain mix are expected to make driving very difficult on Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service is reporting a major weather system will enter Wisconsin from the west, mostly as rain. Central Wisconsin, roughly a line from La Crosse to Green Bay, will experience the heaviest amount of snow at approximately eight to 12 inches and a snowfall rate about 1 inch per hour. The system will begin mostly as rain then turn to freezing rain/sleet/snow and eventually all snow by 8 a.m. Thursday. Gusty northeast winds, 30 to 44 mph, will create blowing and drifting concerns. The weather system will depart the state from west to east by Thursday evening.

If traveling, please use the following tips:

• Clear snow and ice from all windows and lights before driving.
• Go slow. Remember the posted speed limits are for dry pavement.
• Leave plenty of room for stopping.
• Leave room for maintenance vehicles and plows.
• Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly.
• Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition.
• Don’t get overconfident in your 4×4 vehicle.
• Don’t use your cruise control in wintry conditions.
