Tough opening for Lady Robins soccer team in Monday night defeat

For the Antigo Times

Battling through the cold rain and slippery field conditions, the Lady Robins went up against the Kingsford, MI Flivvers on Monday evening, losing 10-0.

The Robins were able to come out just as strong as the Flivvers and had some great passes amongst their midfield, but quickly lost sight of their communication leading to a Kingsford goal within the 5-minute mark.

With such a young, inexperienced Robin team the girls struggled to get their groove on after that. The Flivvers were able to come away with their second goal 10 minutes later. The Lady Robins started to trust each other more and were able to get their passes where they needed to be.

Senior captain Molly Brown did a great job moving the ball up and out of the midfield up to attack freshman Maddy Spencer and junior Kira Ashbeck, but they were quickly shut down by Kingsford’s defense. With only one sub, the Lady Robins were starting to exhaust themselves and allowed four more goals before the half.

The second half started with the defense really stepping up and the Lady Robins communicating more. Freshman captain McKenzie Schroepfer and senior captain Sethany Sass, along with the rest of their defensive line, Jena and Jami Nonnenmacher, did an amazing job of shutting down the Flivvers advances. Sophmore goalie Emma Brown was also able to make some key stops.

Despite the great effort put up by the Lady Robins, the lack of substitutions along with a late game injury led to exhaustion and ultimately a 10-0 loss in the 88th minute of the game.

The Lady Robins take on Wausau East tonight at 4:30 at Listle Field.
